Abstract
941,904. Controlling aircraft. L. BOLKOW, [trading as BOLKOW-ENTWICKLUNGEN KOMM.-GES.]. Dec. 27, 1961 [Dec. 27, 1960], No. 46263/61. Heading B7G. A hinged flap or other movable surface on aircraft is actuated by gearing comprising sprocket wheels and co-operating toothed belts. A wing 1 has a pivot 3 mounted on arms 4, 5 to pivotally support a flap 2 comprising three interconnected sections 2a, 2b and 2c. A sprocket wheel 14 is mounted on the wing by brackets 13 and pivot 15 for operation by the pilot and is connected by a toothed belt 12 to a sprocket 10 fast with section 2a. A sprocket 11 secured by bolts 51 to arms 4, 5 is connected by a toothed belt 17 to a further sprocket 16 fast with section 2b. Section 2c is similarly connected to section 2b and both belts are crossed to cause all the sections to pivot in the same sense, and at the points of cross-over the teeth are omitted to ensure free movement. In a further embodiment the last belt is not crossed to enable section 2c to move in the opposite direction to sections 2a and 2b and in a still further embodiment one part of a belt may be formed externally with teeth which are held into engagement with a sprocket by rollers. The belts may have wires embedded therein to reduce stretch.
