Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A method of supplying wrapping material to a wrapping station in which two tapes or webs of wrapping material in superimposed relationship are advanced together to the wrapping station and severed wherein before or after the two tapes or webs are advanced together, one of the tapes or webs is advanced towards or retracted from the wrapping station whilst the other tape or web remains stationary so that the leading edge of one tape or web formed by the severing operation overlies the leading edge of the other tape or web. Horizontally reciprocating grippers 10, Figs. 6 and 7, draw webs 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> past a cutting device 9. The cutting device 9 is then operated to form superposed wrappers 2, 3, the blades of the cutting device are opened, and a lever 17 carrying a loop-forming roller is actuated downwardly, thereby retracting the leading edge of the web 2<SP>1</SP>. The tapes 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> are drawn by the grippers 10 and cut to form wrappers 2, 3 held in place on a block 6 of candy by a push rod 12. Push rods 11, 12 and folding devices 13, 14, 15, 16 are actuated to wrap the block 6 in the manner shown in Fig. 7. In another embodiment the webs 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 9, are fed by a feed roller 21 co-operating with a feed roller 23 having segments 24, 25, 26 and 27 on a shaft 22. The length of segments 26, 27 is less than the segments 24, 25 thereby causing the web 3<SP>1</SP> to be fed faster than the web 2<SP>1</SP> to provide wrappers 3, 2 after cutting. The webs may be spaced apart by metal tongues 36 (Fig. 13, not shown). The wrappers are wrapped around a block 6 in the same manner as that described with reference to Fig. 7. The roller 23 is interchangeable or the segments thereof are interchangeable to vary the feed of the webs. If an airtight packing is required, an inner insulating foil 30, Fig. 16, may be used with a weldable synthetic plastic foil 31 to produce a packing as shown in Fig. 15.
