Abstract

941,406. Photo-electric curve followers. H.M'S PRINCIPAL SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE WAR DEPARTMENT, LONDON. Sept. 12,1961 [Sept. 13,1960], No. 31522/60. Heading G1A. The invention relates to a photo-electrically controlled tracking device characterized in that the photo-cell controlling the movement of the device is influenced by light passing through a triangular slit, the device being controlled to maintain the part of the path being followed parallel to and a fixed distance from the base of the triangle. In both embodiments disclosed (Figs. 1 and 3) the tracking device is a tricycle having two fixed wheels 6, 6 and a wheel 11 steered in response to the amplified photo-cell output by a cord and pulley system 13 and driven by a motor within the casing 12. In one arrangement Fig. 1 the path 29 to be followed is drawn on a plate 28 fixed above the tricycle. Light from a lamp 21 carried by the tricycle is reflected from the half silvered mirror 23 on to the path 29 and back through the mirror 23 on to the slit 18 behind which is the photo-cell. In the second arrangement (Fig. 3) the tricycle is mounted on a table 42 which is freely movable in a horizontal plane by means of slots and rollers as shown. The path to be followed is drawn on a translucent extension 56 of this table, the light being transmitted through the translucent extension and directed by mirrors 51, 52 and erecting prism 60 on to the triangular slit 18.
