Abstract

1, 073, 562. Measuring visibility. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 30, 1965, No. 50742/65. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G2] In a visibility measuring arrangement the electrical signal produced by a receiver in response to the receipt of light from a pulsed source is maintained constant by using it to adjust the pulse width of the transmitted light and the pulse width is used as a measure of the visibility which may be displayed recorded and/or transmitted. The receiver signal is integrated so that the mean signal value may be compared with a reference value. The path between the transmitter and receiver may be direct or may be folded by a cubical or tetrahedral corner reflector so that the source and receiver may be at the same location, the source comprising a gallium arsenide diode emitting infrared backed by a concave silvered glass reflector. The use of a single source and detector in conjunction with a number of reflecting devices in different directions is described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown) and the use of a number of source/ detector units with a common reflector is described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown). The arrangement is caused to operate an alarm in the absence of received light, and the measuring of slant visibility is discussed. Alternative refracting or reflecting devices may be used instead of a corner reflector. The reflector used may be an active reflector which codes the returned signal in a manner to which the receiver is only responsive.
