Abstract

727,403. Electric follow-up systems. WOOL INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Sept. 24, 1952 [Sept. 14, 1951], No. 21597/51. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] The movement of a member is reproduced with increased mechanical power by a photoelectric cell which is mounted in a member which moves so as to follow the boundary of a beam of light reflected by the member. As shown, an image of a semi-circular mask 6 in front of a light source is projected by a mirror 5, the angular position of which is to be indicated, and lens 7 on to a housing 10 in which is mounted a photo-electric cell. A narrow slot 9 in the box allows light to reach the photo-cell. A light tunnel may be fitted in front of the slot to prevent entry of stray light. The housing carries a nut which is driven by a motor 17 driving a lead-screw 14 through known clutchoperated reversing mechanism 18. In operation the housing moves from right to left until the diameter of the semicircular image 8 enters the slot when the photo-cell operates through a known electronic circuit 19-to reverse the drive of lead-screw 14. Thus the housing 10 oscillates until the position of the image changes. The oscillations of the housing are not transmitted to pen 22 because of lost-motion between a block 20 on which the pin is mounted and guidebars 26 carried by the housing. In a modification the light beam may be of a width greater than the length of the slit, its intensity varying in the direction of deflection or the light beam may vary in width in this direction. Feed-back of the output signal to the mechanism moving the light beam is possible.
