In an apparatus such as a fire extinguisher in which liquid under gas pressure is held in a closed container for discharge on the opening of a release valve, there is provided a gauge tube 6, an open end of which extends into the container to a position corresponding to the minimum permissible depth of liquid while the closed end projects so that its liquid contents are visible when the liquid level and gas pressure are correct. The tube 6 communicates by way of a passage 11 with a closed transparent tube 12 containing a float 14 visible through an observation window in a protective cover carried by the handle assembly 4.
