Abstract

941,181. Atomizing burners. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 23, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959; Sept. 27, 1959], Nos. 6859/59 and 30001/59. Heading F4T. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] In order to effect, or assist in effecting, atomization of oil from the head 10 of a burner fed with oil through passages 22, 24, a transducer 4 abuts the rear end of the burner barrel 8 and imparts vibrations of ultrasonic frequency to the head. A signal generator 2 coupled to the transducer is operated by a pressureoperated switch 28, so that when the oil feed pressure falls below a predetermined value the transducer is operated. Oil flows from the passage 24 to a whirl chamber and is emitted from a spray plate 14, Fig. 2. The outlet end of the barrel includes a velocity transformer 12 which increases the amplitude of the vibrations. The distance A, Figs. 1 and 2, is an exact multiple of one half the wavelength of the imparted vibrations, the distance B is one quarter of the wavelength and the dimension C is an odd multiple of one quarter of the wavelength. In Fig. 3 the atomizer body 42, to the rear end of which a transducer is secured, has a reduced part 44 and oil is tangentially fed to a cylindrical chamber 54 between the part 44 and a cylindrical wall 50 by a duct 64. Additional swirl is imparted by a spiral vane 55, and the oil leaves an annular outlet between a spring- plate 56 and the part 44, which latter part has slots 48 to improve the atomization. The body 42 and the wall 50 are of different materials having different acoustical impedances so that the tip of the part 44 is vibrated relative the spray plate. The distance D is an exact number of half-wavelengths of the applied vibrations, and the distance E is one quarter of the wavelength.
