Abstract

<PICT:0940239/C3/1> <PICT:0940239/C3/2> Equipment for brewer's wort production comprises two or more mash tuns in series or series-parallel, the tuns having overflow ducts which by-pass the mash bed zone of the tuns and have an intake at a predetermined level above the mash bed zone and a discharge into the discharge duct from below the mash bed. With the apparatus of the drawings, tuns 1, each having a mash bed on a perforated plate 3, are each supplied with liquid from an overhead supply pipe 2, wort from below the mash bed of one tun passing into a discharge pipe 4 and then by a pump 8 into the overhead supply pipe(s) of the succeeding tun(s). An overflow pipe 5 in each tun has an open upper end at a predetermined level 6 and the lower end open to the space 7 below the perforated plate 3, and thence to the pipe 4. If a mash bed becomes choked, liquid will rise in the tun and enter the overflow pipe 5 to pass to the succeeding tun(s). A surge tank 9 in the pipe 4, on the upstream side of the pump 8, provides a holding capacity if the rate of flow in the pipe 4 exceeds the demand or rated supply for the succeeding tun(s). Specification 929,835 is referred to.
