Abstract
940,020. Polymerizing acrylonitrile. COURTAULDS Ltd. July 29, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 26307/59. Heading C3P. Acrylonitrile, alone or together with up to 20 % of one or more comonomers, is polymerized in a mixture of dimethyl formamide and an organic liquid which is both a non-solvent for polyacrylonitrile and has less chain transfer activity than dimethyl formamide, the mixture being a solvent for polyacrylonitrile. Organic liquids specified are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, benzene, toluene and xylene. Comonomers specified are methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, styrene, itaconic acid and vinyl pyridine. As polymerization catalysts there may be used azobisisobutyro-nitrile, peroxides and persulphates. The polymer solutions so produced may be used for spinning fibres.
