Abstract

A copolymer of formaldehyde and chloral is prepared by mixing dry formaldehyde and dry chloral in an inert solvent under anhydrous conditions at -60 DEG to -100 DEG C. A catalyst such as methylamine, ethylamine, aniline, pyridine or triphenyl phosphine may be present, while specified solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene, chlorbenzene, decahydronaphthalene, cyclohexane, pentane, hexane, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. The end groups of the copolymer may be acetylated, e.g. with boiling acetic anhydride containing a little sodium acetate.
