Abstract

939,718. Liquid fuel burners. AUTOCOMBUSTIONS (LONDON).Ltd., and SHELLMEX & B.P. Ltd. Sept. 18, 1962 [Jan. 1, 1962], No. 30/62. Class 75 (1). In a liquid fuel burning apparatus fuel supplied from a tank 11 is passed through a filter 15, pressurized by pumps 17, 18, heated in a heating pipe 29, passed through flow control orifices where the reduction in pressure vaporizes the fuel, further heated in a superheating pipe 75 to convert the vapour into a dry gas, and finally burnt in a burner 81. The pumps 17, 18 are connected in parallel and valves 89, 90 may be opened to enable some of the output to be returned to the tank 11. Fuel may also return to the tank through a pressure safety valve 26 having a fuel return line 27. The flow control orifices are provided in flow control elements 51, 52, 53, 54 which are connected in parallel between the pipes 29, 75 and each has a manually operated inlet and a manually operated outlet valve. A solenoid valve 39, 40 controls the flow of fuel to a pair of control elements. A further solenoid valve 44 situated in a conduit 42 connected to the outlet from the heating pipe 29 is automatically opened when the solenoid valves 39, 40 are closed, to allow fuel to return to the tank 11 through a further flow control element 41 which may be similar to the other flow control elements. Each flow control element, Fig. 2, comprises a body 55 having an inlet pipe 67 and an outlet pipe 66 and a threaded hexagonal member 64 having a longitudinal bore 65 forming the flow control orifice. Each flow control orifice may have a different bore. The heating and the superheating pipe are heated electrically by means of a transformer 35 connected to the ends of the pipes. The superheating pipe 75 may also have a heating winding fed by the transformer 35 disposed around it and sections may be heated independently. Alternatively, the fuel may be heated by a steam jacket around the heating pipe 29 or the pipe may be replaced by a chamber having electric or steam heating elements disposed inside it. The temperature of the heating pipe 29 and superheating pipe 75 may be controlled by elements 86, 87 sensitive to the temperature near the outlets from the pipes. The superheating pipes may be provided with a blower or fan to boost the gas pressure.
