Abstract

939,301. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 8, 1960 [Jan. 17, 1959], No. 1789/59. Class 103 (1). A disc brake comprises a rotatable disc 1, a non-rotatable base member encircling the disc on a chord thereof, a pair of opposed pressureplates 6, situated on opposite sides of the disc and mounted on the base member 2 for pivotal movement about axes extending parallel to the braking surfaces of the disc, friction pads 16 being mounted on the pressure-plates 6 and means for moving the pressure-plates about their pivots 5 to bring the pads 16 into frictional engagement with the disc 1. A piston-andcylinder assembly 21, 23 is mounted respectively on one of the pressure plates and arranged to move apart on admission of fluid pressure to the cylinder thereby to move the pressure plates to the braking position. Figs. 1 and 2 show an arrangement of the brake for the front wheels of a motor vehicle. Fig. 4 shows an alternative embodiment suitable for the rear wheels of the vehicle but provided with alternative mechanical applying means 29, 30 for brake actuation. This latter embodiment also shows a different arrangement for the fluid pressure cylinder, the latter being mounted on lever arms 29, the piston acting through thrust-rod 34 to engage a pressure plate 6 on one side of the disc, the movement of the cylinder and lever arms 29 actuating the other pressure-plate 6 by means of interconnecting actuating-rod 19 which may be adjustable manually or automatically to compensate for brake pad wear. The brake pads 16 are housed in recesses 14 in the pressure-plates 6 so that the pads 15 are free to rotate in the recesses 14 to align their braking faces with those of the disc but are prevented from sideways movement by lips 15 on the pressureplates. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 665,273.
