Abstract

1,017,561. Disc brakes. ELLISTON, EVANS & JACKSON Ltd. March 15, 1962 [Dec. 15, 1960], No. 43272/60. Heading F2E. A disc brake which is applied by energy storage means, e.g. a spring, and released by an electromagnet, comprises a pair of arms 3, 4 pivoted on the same axis 8 (Fig. 4, not shown), or on parallel axes 6, 7 (Fig. 2) and carrying pads 13, 14 of friction material disposed on opposite sides of a disc 1 the axis of which is perpendicular to the arm pivot or pivots. The pads are secured to shoes 11, 12 which are pivoted to the arms 3, 4. Two pairs of arms are preferably provided, one on either side of the axis of the disc, a separate electromagnet 22 being associated with each pair of arms. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, the electromagnets are secured on the arms 3 and the armatures 23 of the electromagnets are separately connected to the respective arms 4 by screw adjustment means, a rod 17 secured to each arm 3 carrying a spring 21 the pressure of which on arm 4 is adjusted by nuts 19, 20 for applying the respective pair of pads 13, 14 with the desired force. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the pressures exerted on the two pairs of arms by the electromagnets are equalized by cross-bars 24, 25 urged together by a single centrally disposed spring 21 to apply the brake. In the further embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown), each electromagnet 22 is mounted separately on a pivot carried by base 10 and its armature 23 is connected to one arm 26 of a bell-crank lever carried by the arm 4, the other arm 28 of this lever being connected by a link 27 to the arm 3.
