Abstract
Vinyl chloride is prepared by passing 1,2-ethylene dichloride through a tube of internal diameter 2.42 to 8.5 cm. at 20-38 atmos. pressure and 900-1000 DEG F., condensing the products and distilling the vinyl chloride from the condensate. The pyrolysis tube is preferably centrally located along the longitudinal plane of a box type radiant furnace with side burners (see Group XII) and the gaseous products are preferably passed into a quench tower with means for removing superheat only to ensure that they leave said tower at their dew point, measurement of which gives the degree of conversion of the ethylene dichloride. The gases may be made to leave the quench tower at their dew point by arranging for any change in level of liquid at the base of the tower to alter the temperature of the quench liquid entering the tower by adjusting the proportion of the circulating liquid passing through a heat exchanger (see Group XIII).
