Abstract
<PICT:0598885/III/1> In a chemical furnace [see Group XII] in which reactants in vapour form pass through reaction tubes which may contain a catalyst, the tubes 9 may be arranged in series in a chamber divided by baffles 11 forming a sinuous path for the heating gases. The furnace may be used for the production of acetic anhydride from acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst [see Group IV].ALSO:In a chemical furnace (see Groups III and XII) in which the reactants in vapour form pass through heated reaction tubes acetic acid vapours are heated from 180 DEG F.-930 DEG F. in preheating tubes before passing into the reaction tubes, where transformation to acetic anhydride occurs in the presence of a catalyst.
