Abstract
938,228. Rail vehicle axle detectors. STAMI. CARBON N.V. Jan. 20, 1960 [Jan. 20, 1959; July 29, 1959], No. 2131/60. Class 105. In an inductive apparatus for detecting the presence of a vehicle axle at a detection point on a rail track, the coupling between primary and secondary coils 9 and 8, respectively, is increased as the wheels 11 and axle 10 complete the magnetic circuit formed by the rails 1 and 2 and an iron plate 3 joining the rails at the detection point. The coils 9 and 8 are wound in holes, like those shown at 4, 5, 6 and 7, cut in the rail web. A mains supply 12 is connected to coil 9 and the secondary coil is connected to an amplifier and rectifier unit 13 which supplies an output to operate relay 14 when an axle passes over the detection point. A compensating coil wound with the primary coil 9 and closely coupled thereto produces an output signal which, in the absence of an axle, cancels in unit 13 the signal produced by the secondary coil and the unit includes limiting means for ensuring relay operation only at the peak signal produced by an axle passage.
