Abstract

<PICT:0938137/III/1> <PICT:0938137/III/2> <PICT:0938137/III/3> An apparatus for oxidizing a metal powder in a turbulent flame consists of a central bore through which a gas-borne stream of metal powder is fed to the furnace and a burner assembly surrounding said bore, provided with a plurality of equispaced tubular conduits having inwardly directed nozzles for a fuel/air mixture intersecting the bore axis at 15-40 degrees. The fuel/air mixture is supplied to the conduits through an annular manifold chamber containing a baffle member provided with perforations corresponding with the nozzles but circumferentially staggered in relation thereto, whereby a uniform mixture is supplied to each nozzle. The conduits have a length to diameter ratio of between 9:1 and 12:1 and they may be counter-bored at their nozzle ends. Fig. 1 shows pipe 1 through which pressurized carrier gas is passed to entrain the metal powder introduced into hopper 3. The entrained metal powder passes through the burner enclosed in member 7, the fuel gas and oxygen or air being introduced through tubes 9 and 11. The burner is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 which indicate conduits 13 arranged around bore 23. The fuel gas and oxygen mixture is introduced through tubes 9 and 11, passes through manifold 17 containing baffle 19 and into furnace 5 via the conduits 13. The baffle openings 21 are staggered with respect to the conduit inlets 18. Fig. 2 shows bore 15 flared in the portion adjacent to counterbored conduit nozzles 23. An example refers to the oxidation of an ironchromium alloy.
