Abstract

938,062. Thrust bearings. KENNEDY VAN SAUN MFG. & ENG. CORPORATION Aug. 16, 1961, No. 29643/61. Class 12 (1). A thrust bearing arrangement for a rotary kiln or the like, incorporating means responsive to thrust overloads comprises a steel tyre 12 coaxial with the kiln axis, with a wide bearing surface 14 which rests on carrying rollers (not shown) the tyre being provided with bevelled edges or sides 16, 18. Thrust rollers 20, 22, with bevelled rims engage the tyre sides and each roller is freely rotatable on a stub shaft 24 attached to a bridge 26 which is mounted on a supporting structure. The bridge 26 which extends parallel to the kiln axis is pivoted at one end on a pivot shaft 28 while the other end is supported resiliently by means of springs 30 which may be pre-loaded by adjustment of nuts on stud bolts 62. Initial alignment of the bridge may be effected by shims 44 and 66 at each end of said bridge. The arrangement operates whenever there is a longitudinal thrust overload which is transmitted from the kiln tyre via the thrust roller to the bridge which causes a deflection of the preset springs as the bridge moves downwards about the pivot shaft. A further embodiment includes a means associated with the bridge deflection whereby the deflection may actuate an alarm or warning system.
