Abstract
646,683. Knife-edge bearings. WILLIAMSON, S. Oct. 27, 1948, No. 27914. [Class 12 (i)] A pivotal knife-edge bearing for scientific apparatus, such as an aircraft gyroscopic tilt indicator, which is subject to vibration and movement is maintained in position by an auxiliary knife edge in alignment with the main knife edge. As shown, the main knife edge 13 of a pivoting member 11 on a frame 10 engages a V-notch 14 of a fixed supporting member 15, and a normally horizontal platform 16 on the member 11 is engaged by an auxiliary knife edge 17 carried by a lever 18 mounted on an eccentric pivot 21 which provides lateral adjustment. A screw abutment 23 effects auxiliary knife edge engagement. The angles of the main knife edge 13 and V-notch 14 are preferably 80 and 110 degrees respectively, and the axial width of the former is twice that of the latter to permit axial adjustment, which adjusting movement may be limited by screw means (not shown) engaging the ends of the member 11 by the substitution of a pointed member engaging a conical depression for one of the knife edge bearings. The bearing surfaces may be of hardened steel or agate.
