Abstract

937,662. Door closers. STANMORE SPRINGS Ltd. Jan. 12, 1960 [Oct. 13, 1958], No. 32576/58. Class 65 (1). A double-acting floor spring (Fig. 1) comprises a spindle S provided with a circular flange 16 having two diametrically opposite recesses 26 adapted to be engaged by a spring-loaded bolt 11 to hold the door releasably in either of its fully open positions, the bolt being moved to a retracted position by the rotation of a turnbutton 18 projecting through an opening in the cover-plate (not shown) of the closer when it is desired that the door shall close automatically from the fully open positions. The bolt 11, which is carried by a housing 13 secured to the underside of the cover-plate, has a roller 15 co-operating with the flange 16 and is formed with a hole 20 engaged by an eccentric pin 19 provided on the turnbutton. The closing springs 2 act on a movable beam 3 formed with recesses 8 to receive cam lobes 6 on the spindle. In the floor spring shown in Fig. 3 the force exerted by the springs 2 when the door is fully open lies substantially along the line connecting the operative cam lobe 6 with the axis of the spindle so that the spring force is insufficient to close the door. In order to ensure that, if desired, the door is always automatically closed after use means are provided to prevent the door from reaching a position in which the torque applied by the springs is insufficient to close it. - These means comprise a bridge 41 (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), slidably mounted on the undersurface of the cover-plate under the control of a turnbutton and carrying a pair of depending stops 40. In the operative position these stops abut limbs 3a of the beam 3 when the door approaches its fully open position.
