A hinge Fig. 2, incorporates fluid check mechanism comprising two relatively non- rotatable cylinders 13, 14 slidably mounted one within the other for relative axial movement, the outer cylinder being mounted at its closed end on one end of a shaft 12 constituting one of the hinge members and extending beyond the other parts of the hinge for non-rotatable attachment to a floor or other fixed surface and the inner cylinder being adapted to move relative to the outer cylinder in response to relative rotation of the hinge members, means being provided to permit a free flow of fluid in one direction between the interior 18 of the inner cylinder and the chamber 19 between the cylinders but only a checked flow in the other direction. The other hinge member comprises a cylindrical housing 1 adapted to be attached to the door 5. Near its top the housing 1 carries a pair of cam rollers 24 which engage a cam surface 26 at the top of the inner cylinder 14 so that the latter is moved upwards and downwards under the action of a spring 25 as the door is opened or closed. When the inner cylinder rises fluid enters the chamber 19 through a non-return valve 16, but during the checking stroke fluid can only leave the chamber through a regulating valve 21 and passage 20. A door closing spring 29 is secured at its ends to the shaft 12 and to a plug 8 connected to the housing 1. The plug 8 carries one race of a ball bearing 9, the other race being carried by a block 10 secured to the floor, and can be rotated to adjust the spring tension. The hinge shown is suitable for doors opening in one direction only, but in a modified embodiment (Fig. 3-8, not shown) suitable for doors opening in both directions two closing springs are provided and a series of projections and stops on the shaft 12 and housing 1 cause one or other of the springs to be wound up according to the direction in which the door is opened. Fig. 9 shows a device for releasably holding the door in its open position, comprising a plate 38 adapted to be secured beneath a bar 6 integral with the housing 1 and carrying a pair of arms 41 urged together by a spring 42. The ends 43 of the arms ride on a sleeve 55 keyed to the shaft 12 and engage releasably in a pair of diametrically opposite indentations 44 in the surface of the sleeve. An alternative device, Fig. 10, comprises a pair of interengaging coaxial blocks 46, 47 adapted to be secured to two relatively rotatable parts of the hinge. The block 47 has an annular slot 48 formed with a pair of diametrically opposite recesses 49, and the block 46 has an upstanding annular portion 50 complementary to the slot. Bores 51 in the portion 50 house balls 53 urged into engagement with the recesses 49 by springs 52 adjustable by screws 54.
