Abstract

1,168,983. Door closing and checking appliance. J. I. ADAMS. 30 Jan., 1967 [4 Nov., 1965], No. 46767/65. Heading E2M. A door closing and checking'appliance comprises a housing 10 supporting a spindle 17 which rotates on opening and closing of the door, a member 13 which on opening of the door is displaced against the action of spring 11, reaction of the spring closing the door, and a damping mechanism comprising a piston 24 reciprocatable in cylinder 18 on closing of the door so as to force fluid in space 25 through restricted passages 41, 38, 39, 40 respectively thereby causing a damping effect. The extent of damping is controlled by rotating cylinder 18 with respect to piston 24 such that a different cross-sectional area of the passage 38 located on its inner circumference is. presented between passages 41 and 40. Member 13 may be moved by the action of a cam 16 forming part of spindle 17 on roller 15, and the piston 24 may be reciprocated by means of connecting rods 33, 34. A non-return ball valve 36 may be provided in the piston. The appliance may be used in conjunction with doors hinging about vertical and horizontal axes. In the event of requiring a sharp door closing movement e.g. to actuate a latch, the restricted flow passage through groove 38 may be by-passed, the fluid from space 25 being directed through grooves 41, 44, bore 43, and grooves 42, 40.
