Abstract

396,889. Spring hinges ; checks. MITCHELL, J. G., 20, Victoria Gardens, Chichester Park, Belfast. May 11, 1932, No. 13549. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] A hinge comprises a member with a cylindrical chamber coaxial with the pivoting axis, a member provided with lugs extending across the ends of this chamber, one or more camsection pivot pieces formed separately from the hinge members and contained in the chamber, means for connecting the pivot piece or pieces to the member carrying the lugs, and spring or fluid-check controlling means contained in a lateral chamber or chambers in the first hinge member and co-operating with the pivot piece or pieces. Fig. 6 shows a hinge having a single pivot piece with spring and check controlling means. The main member a of the hinge has a cylindrical chamber containing the pivot piece e and two transverse chambers, one containing a spring d and the other a fluid check device. The other member o of the hinge has two lugs which extend across the ends of the member a ; the upper lug is connected to the pivot piece by a non-circular pin, and the lower lug carries a short pin engaging a socket in the member a. In a modification, the pivot piece e may extend completely through the member a and.engage the lower lug j in a similar manner to the upper ; in a further modification, two separate pivot pieces are used, each attached to one of the lugs j, and the main chamber in member a is divided by a wall across its centre. The spring d presses at one end on a thimble g bearing on a cam surface of the pivot piece and at the other on a screw cap h which closes the outer end of the spring chamber and is accessible for adjustment or replacement of the spring when the hinge is in place on the door. The fluid check device comprises a spring-controlled piston t bearing against a cam surface on the pivot piece and carrying a non-return ball-valve w, fluid being forced through a needle valve z when the door is closing ; the needle valve z is screwed into a spring-loaded relief valve 2 which yields under excessive pressure, both these valves being carried in a screw cap which closes the check chamber, the needle valve stem being accessible for adjustment. A hinge may have a number of controlling springs with a single check device, or may have a spring or springs only or a check only. The pivot piece may have roller bearings in the chamber of the main member a. The invention may be applied to a double hinge, allowing the door to open in either direction, as shown in Fig. 5. In this case the central member r carries the lugs of both hinges, the parts a, containing the controlling means, being fixed to the door and door post. In a modification, the controlling means are housed in the central member and the attachment members carry the lugs ; in this case two check pistons may be arranged in the same lateral chamber in opposition to one another, with the regulating valve and relief valve placed intermediately. The attachment members are preferably provided with screws s, held against accidental rotation by the pressure of springs n, which bear against the central member r and allow adjustment of the closed position of the door.
