Abstract

19,477. Allen, F. L. van. Aug. 19. Composite vibration - dampers; dash-pots. - Consists in providing a combined spring hinge and check for doors &c. with barrels A, Fig. 2, which rotate upon a fixed barrel A<1>, and contain hollow axles C, D secured therein. The axle D contains a plunger G, which is provided with a transverse rod H carrying a pair of rollers I, which engage cam grooves E, Fig. 4, in the axle D. Rotation of the plunger is prevented by means of additional rollers J, which engage grooves K in the fixed barrel A', or the top of the plunger may be provided with a pair of keys engaging the grooves K. The lower portion of the plunger is provided with two passages M controlled by ball valves L and moves over an upstanding tube F provided with transverse ports communicating with the spaces within and below the plunger. The lower port is adjustable by means of a valve O. As the hinge barrels A rotate, the plunger is raised and compresses a doorclosing spring N, while a liquid in the lower portion of the plunger passes through the valves L and passage M to the space beneath it. The closing of the door is checked by the return of the liquid through the adjustable passage in the tube F. In a modification, the valves L are omitted, and the upper end of the tube F is tapered to allow the passage of the liquid to the space beneath the plunger when the door is opened.
