Abstract

601,502. Door checks; hinges. BAKEWELL, G. G. Oct. 8, 1945, No. 26218. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1944. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A door hinge including a hydraulic check comprises a member 14, carrying the door, clamped to a shaft 12 which oscillates in a cylinder 11 on the door frame, the shaft having a vane 22 fixed to or integral with it and the cylinder being provided with a partition 23 against .which the shaft bears, to divide the cylinder into two chambers. The vane is provided with two passages 40, 41 connecting the two chambers, each passage having a one-way ball check-valve and being adapted to be closed by the partition when the vane approaches the respective end of its movement, so that the door is checked at the end of both opening and closing movements, the fluid then passing from one chamber to the other only through a pair of crossed passages 35 controlled by a screw valve 36. The initiation of checking is made gradual by providing tapering grooves in the partition to co-operate with the openings of the one-way passages in the vane, and freedom from checking during final closing, to ensure latching, may be given by a groove in the end of the cylinder connecting the opposite sides of the vane at the appropriate position. The upper end of the cylinder is closed by a hollow cap 27 which forms a reservoir for fluid, communicating with both chambers of the cylinder through check valves 31 ; any fluid passing up along the shaft is returned to the reservoir by a groove 34 and holes 33. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect.'91 comprises also the following matter :- Spring hinges.-The check hinge is preferably placed at the lower part of the door, and a hinge of similar form placed at the upper part of the door takes the weight of the door, the latter hinge being provided, in place of the vane and partition, with a helical torsion spring anchored at one end to the cylinder and at the other end to a collar adjustable on the shaft. Pivoting-adjustments.-The door may be held open by spring-pressed balls in a transverse bore in the shaft (or a ring fixed thereon) engaging depressions in the shaft bearing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
