Abstract

1,157,965. Spring door closer with check device. WILLIAM NEWMAN & SONS Ltd. 23 Feb., 1968 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 56852/66. Heading E2M. In a spring door-closing and check appliance comprising a horizontal fluid filled cylinder 1, containing compression springs 3 and a sliding piston reciprocated from a vertical spindle 5 by a pinion 6 on the spindle engaging rack teeth 7 on the axially offset connecting bar 4, fluid resistance to the closing movement of the door is regulated by a cylindrical regulating pin 9 carried rotatably in a central aperture of a screwed plug 8 which closes the end of the cylinder towards which the piston moves during the closing of the door. The pin 9 extends axially into the cylinder and through a central bore in the front head 21 of the piston, and is formed in its periphery with a longitudinal tapering resistance groove 10 extending from its free end towards the plug 8, the groove becoming shallower and narrower in a direction towards the plug. The resistance groove 10 cooperates with an Oblique concave recess 11 in the outer end of the front head 2' of the piston, so that by turning he pin 9 the resistance offered at any particular position of the piston can be varied. The regulating pin is provided with another longitudinal groove 14, closed at both ends. As the piston approaches the end of its stroke, corresponding to the last portion of the closing movement of the door, the groove 14 comes into communication with the 'radial passage 15 in the piston head, and thus with an escape groove 16 in the periphery of the piston head, relieving the fluid resistance, and enabling the door to close with a sufficiently strong movement to overcome the latch resistance.
