Abstract

936,924. Automatic uncoupling devices. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION Ltd. Feb. 6, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961], No. 5360/61. Class 103(5). A device for automatically swinging a pivoted lock operating member 14 of an automatic coupler such as that shown in Specification 936,923 Fig. 3, comprises a carrier 24, Figs. 4, 5 pivoted on journals 22 to brackets 20 in a well beneath the track 19, a plate 25 which may slide transversely of the carrier, a pair of upstanding walls 46 on the slide forming between them a tapering mouth 47, a throat 49, and a widened portion 50, and a spring controlled plunger 34 connected to the carrier 24 at 32 to control the pivoting of the carrier. In operation, coupled up couplers A, B, Figs. 7, 10, are carried along by their cars so that their depending members 14, 15 pass through the mouth and throat of the slide, the pivoted members 14 being swung towards the fixed depending projections 15 to unlock the couplers. The slide 25 must however reciprocate transversely of the carrier 24 along a pin and slot connection 28, 29, to allow the projections 15 to pass through the throat. If the slide is at a level which obstructs the path of a part 59 of the underside of a car, then the part 59 may ride up and down inclined surfaces 53, 55 and 54, 56, the slide and carrier being depressed against the action of the plunger 34. Resetting of the locking members may be effected by another track mounted device (not shown).
