Abstract

936,384. Root crop harvesters. J. D. DYSON, and C. R. DYSON. Dec. 23, 1959 [Sept. 23, 1958], No. 30364/58. Class 6(3). A root crop harvester has lifting means and topping means and is characterised in that the topping means is adjustable laterally of the machine relative to the lifting means. The topping means comprises a driven feeler drum 2 supported on an arm 4 attached to a sleeve 5 pivoted on a shaft 6 fixed to the main harvester frame. A U-shaped member 7 may be moved by a crank 9 to slide the sleeve 5 on the shaft 6. Alternative means of moving the U-shaped member 7 include pivoted levers, pulley and chain, hydraulic ram, rack and pinion or gear wheels. Skeith wheels 14 are mounted on arms 13 attached to the U-shaped member. In a modification a skeith wheel is mounted to pivot about a separate axis and two arms supporting the feeler drum are pivoted directly on the shaft 6. In a further embodiment the topping unit may be fixed to the shaft 6 and the shaft mounted to be movable transversely of the machine.
