In a pit-prop relief valve the closure member and/or the seat member is or are made of vitreous or ceramic material or of a crystalline mineral of the precious stone group. In the first example, Fig. 1, the ball closure member 8 is made of a vitreous or ceramic material and is loaded by a spring 10 on to a seat 14 in a housing 7. The fluid under pressure acts on a piston 2 which through a tappet 4, a set-screw 5, a pivoted lever 6 and a tappet 13 lifts the ball from its seat. The seat may be on an insert member and the closure member may be of the ordinary conical head form.
