Abstract

936,250. Stretching webs laterally. EDWARD WILSON & SON Ltd. Oct. 13, 1961 [Oct. 20, 1960], No. 35983/60. Class 76. Apparatus for the treatment of hides and skins of the kind comprising a pair of coacting driven pressure rolls 11 is characterized by the provision of a conveyer 27 means substantially in alignment with the nip of the pressure rolls and mounted above the conveyer two spaced spreader cylinders 32, 33, each having left and right helically arranged spreader members 32b, 33b; the spreader cylinders being driven so as to rotate in opposite directions about axes substantially parallel to the axes of the pressure of the pressure rolls and each being arranged for movement into and out of operative movement with a skin or hide being carried by the conveyer into the nip of the pressure rolls. The cylinders 32, 33 are carried by rocking arms 34, 35 actuated by a link 54, levers 56, 57 and piston-rod 62 of a doubleacting hydraulic cylinder 63. In operation, the arms 34, 35 are positioned such that the cylinder 33 spreads the leading portion of a skin as it is fed to the rolls 11, 11. As the skin passes between a photo-electric cell 67 and light 70 a solenoid valve 66 is actuated to cause rocking of the arms 34, 35, thereby raising cylinder 33 and raising lowering cylinder 32 into engagement with a skin on the conveyer 27. The skin is spread out and smoothed by the spreader members 32b of the cylinder 32. Springs 64, 65 provide a resilient connection between the rod 62 and lever 60 such that the cylinders 32, 33 are pressed resiliently into engagement with skins on the conveyer. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), hydraulic fluid is supplied to and exhausted from the power cylinder 63 through a mechanically operated valve 80 actuated by a treadle 81.
