Abstract

909,204. Guiding webs transversely. FULTON & SONS Ltd., WILLIAM. April 8, 1959 [April 9, 1958; April 16, 1958], Nos. 11150/58 and 12119/58. Class 100 (1). A web W is guided laterally by one or a pair of rollers mounted in a support which can both pivot about an axis 63 normal to the web and move transversely of the web. Rollers 11, 12 . spring-urged together are rotatably mounted in a U-shaped bracket 14 pivotally mounted in a bracket 18 fixed to a frame 20, Fig. 1 (not shown). The frame 20 is mounted on stationary ball-races, not shown, so as to be movable transversely of the web. The frame 20 is actuated by a double-acting piston and cylinder 22, Fig. 1 (not shown), supplied with air under pressure through a control unit 28, Fig. 2, in response to movements of web-engaging feeler 34. A second feeler 51 engaging the web in advance of the rollers 11, 12 controls a unit 19 which supplies air under pressure to a double-acting piston and cylinder 23, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the web is guided by a single roller provided with spikes for gripping the web. The spikes may be replaced by carding wire or rough-surfaced rubber.
