In an apparatus for treating leather and skins comprising a roller rotatable about a stationary axis, an adjacent roller rotatable about a movable axis parallel to the stationary axis, means for positively rotating at least one of the rollers, a movable carrier in which the movable roller is mounted and a pressure fluid unit for moving said carrier and thereby the movable roller, there is interposed between the pressurefluid unit and the carrier coupling means of a kind which permits movement to be imparted to the carrier by a force exerted by the pressure fluid unit but prevents any substantial reverse movement to be transmitted by the carrier in opposition to said force. According to the embodiment shown in the Figure, 11 is a chaindriven stationary roller, while the chain-driven roller 13 is supported by the carrier 15 which is pivotal about a fulcrum 16, both axes 12 and 14 of the rollers being horizontal. The cam follower 17 at the lower end of the carrier is arranged to bear against the surface of an adjacent profile cam or eccentric 18, the position of repose of the carrier being such that 17 tends to be moved towards engagement with 18. The circular cam 18 is mounted for reciprocating rotary movement about an eccentric axis 19 by the piston-rod 20 attached at 21, 20 being moved by the action of the air piston and cylinder unit 22. The stops 25 (adjustably bolted to 15) and 26 (affixed to the machine frame) allow the minimum distance between the rollers 11 and 13 to be varied. The broken line 29 shows the locus of 21, the maximum distance of movement being to 21<SP>1</SP>. The broken line 30 shows the movement of a point of the cam surface. The position of cam follower 17 is adjustable by means of the screw 27 and nut 28.
