880,988. Restoring shape of drums; annular rolling. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. June 24, 1960 [July 29, 1959], No. 25938/59. Class 83 (4). A drum-fettling machine comprises an ironing roller around which the drum can be rotatably mounted, a directly drivable roller movable to nip the mounted drum with the ironing roller, and at least one further directly drivable roller movable to contact and rotate the mounted drum. In an embodiment the drum 1 to be fettled is mounted around a steel ironing roller 2 freely rotatable on a shaft 3 supported on the machine frame 4. A steel roller 5 driven by an electric motor 6 is mounted on a carrier frame 7 pivoted at one end 8 to the machine frame 4 and at the other to levers 9, 10 and at 13 to the piston-rod of a pneumatic cylinder 11. Two rubber-covered steel rollers 15, 16 driven by an electric motor 31 are mounted on a carrier frame 17 pivoted at one end to the frame 4 at 18 and connected at the other end to lever mechanism 19, 20 attached to the piston-rod of a pneumatic cylinder 21. In operation, fluid pressure is fed to the cylinders 11 and 21 to move the rollers 5, 15 and 16 into contact with the drum. The motors 6 and 31 are switched on to drive rollers 5, 15 and 16 which rotate the drum between the nip of rollers 2 and 5, thus ironing out any distortions on the cylindrical surface of the drum.
