Abstract
1413768 Rollers AVERY PRODUCTS CORP 8 Jan 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 00734/74 Heading F2U The surface of a web-guiding roller is shifted axially during rotation in response to the bodily displacement of the roller as by an hydraulic cylinder 26. The roller body 30 is supported by ball bearings 23 on a non-rotary shaft 21 which is keyed for axial movement in a block 14 provided with a boss 15 so that it can be clamped in any angular position by a split block 12. The block 14 also carries a cam plate 47 in which rides the follower 45 of an arm 44 attached at its opposite end to the non-rotary inner ring 41 of the swash plate. When the shaft 21 is bodily displaced by the hydraulic cylinder 26 automatically in response to sensors monitoring the lateral deviation of the web, the arm 44 moves to tilt the swash plate about a pin 49 to cause pins 51 on the rotary ring 42 of the swash plate to reciprocate slats 32 which are covered with an elastomeric surface 34 and slide on ball bearings in dovetailed grooves. For some web materials the steering action may be improved by adjusting the angular position of the pin 49; this may be done during operation by loosening the bolt 53 of the split block 12, rotating the block 14 and consequently the shaft and pin 49 and then retightening the bolt 53. If desired the roller may be covered with a rubber sheath, the axial motion being imparted to it by the slats.
