According to the present invention thereeis provided a rotary swaging or forging machine of the type hereinbefore referred to wherein plungers incorporatin .compensating springs areslidably'mounted in the hcaidso as to bear on the side walls of thehammer blockS,means being provided to increase or relieve the pressure of the plnngers against the side walls of the hammer'iiblocks.
An object of the present'invcntion-is-to avoid thenecessity of personal actuation of the pressure varying means and to provide for automatic reduction of the pressure applied by the plunger when the machine is not in use but still is running.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a rotary swaging or forging machine of the type hereinbefore referred to wherein plungers incorporating compression or compensating springs are slidably mounted in the head so as to bear on the side walls of the hammer blocks said machine incorporating at the entrance or work receiving orifice a member which is dis- .placeable by virtue of the work insertion so as to automatically relieve the pressure exerted by the plungers when the machine is in use but restore the pressure when the work is withdrawn for silencing the machine Whilst running and not in use.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice reference may be had to the accompanying drawing in which the figure illustrates in longitudinal sectional elevation a swaging or forging machine having silencing means with automatic actuation according to the present invention.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention there is provided a rotary swaging or forging machine of the type comprising a head a with a heavy rotating flywheel b mounted thereon and driven as, for example, by a motor on a superstructure by belting. The flywheel carries circumferentially spaced rollers c which operate radially movable hammer blocks d with dies e carried by the head a whereon the flywheel is mounted.
The present invention, however, is particularly concerned with the siliencing of the hammer blocks when the machine is not actually in use and accordingly in the head which carries the flywheel there are provided four or other suitable number of parallel bores a normally horizontal, wherein plungers a are accommodated each plunger being of a two part character with the intermediary of a compression or compensating spring a One extremity of each composite plunger bears upon a hammer block d there being four hammer blocks it four plungers are employed. The other extremity of each composite plunger protrudes into a cavity and is engaged by a flange f on an axially displaceable tube 1 within the hollow head of the machine and the opposite eX- tremity of this tube is provided with an adjustable flanged nut f2 engaged by a roller g on the upper extremity of a bifurcated lever g (normally disposed vertically) which is pivoted at g to a lower part of the machine and which 3,002,406 Patented Oct. 3, 1961 can'be acted upon'by .an aircylin'der g Accordingly with the present .apparatus pressure canl'be *brought I10 bear upon theplungers d so' 'that 'theyin turn bear against the' hammer blocks d .to prevent hattering. "The pressure can be readily relieved when the machine {is required for swaging'or forging.
At the front or work receiving end of the machine there is provided a curved trigger 11 mounted on aitrans-v niitted at i'so that the movement of h returned by the spring'h opens and closes a valveto 1' connected to air cylinder Accordingly in this invention when the wonk is introducedintothe machine which is running and whichlh'als the'plungers a silencing the hammer blocks d, the said trigger h is displaced to admit the entrance of this work and this displacement is used to cut 06 the air supply from the air cylinder g so that the pressure against the hammer blocks of the plungers with their springs is relieved. When the work is withdrawn the spring I1 returns the trigger it to its normal position standing at the entrance aperture and this movement is utilized to again actuate the air cylinder for bringing the plungers into their silencing condition that is to say, pressed against the hammer blocks.
Although it is advantageous to utilise a pneumatic system between the trigger and the pivotal bifurcated member it will be appreciated that hydraulic, electrical or mechanical means may be used for this purpose.
I claim:
1. In a rotary swaging machine having a plurality of radially reciprocatory hammer blocks, a damping device for reducing noise created by such machine when running empty, said damping device comprising, in combination, a plurality of plungers, including springs to expand said plungers longitudinally, fluid pressure means acting to press said plungers longitudinally against the sides of said hammer blocks, a lever and push rod transmission mechanism interposed between said fluid pressure means and said plungers, a conduit for supplying fluid under pressure to said fluid pressure means, a valve in said conduit, yieldable means for normally holding said valve closed, and a trigger to be acted upon by work pieces placed in said machine whereby said trigger controls said valve to thereby relieve said hammer blocks from the retarding eflect of said damping device while said swaging machine is operating upon work pieces.
2. In a rotary swaging machine having a plurality of radially reciprocatory hammer blocks, a damping device for reducing noise created by such machine when running empty, said damping device comprising, in combination, a plurality of plungers, fluid pressure means acting to press said plungers longitudinally against the sides of said hammer blocks, a lever and push rod transmission mechanism interposed between said fluid pressure means and said plungers, a conduit for supplying fluid under pressure to said fluid pressure means, a valve in said conduit, yieldable means for normally holding said valve closed, and a trigger to be acted upon by work pieces placed in said machine whereby said trigger controls said valve to thereby relieve said hammer blocks from the retarding effect of said damping device while said swaging machine is operating upon work pieces.

In a rotary swaging machine having a plurality of radially reciprocatory hammer blocks, a damping device for reducing noise created by such machine when running empty, said damping device comprising, in combination, a plurality of plungers, fluid pressure means acting to press said plungers against the sides of said hammer blocks, transmission mechanism interposed between said fluid pressure means and said plungers, a conduit for supplying fluid under pressure to said fluid pressure means, a valve in said conduit, yieldable means for normally holding said valve closed, and a trigger to be acted upon by work pieces placed'in said machine whereby said trigger controls said valve to thereby relieve said hammer blocks from the retarding eifect of said damping device While said swaging machine is operating upon work pieces.
4. In a rotary swaging machine having a plurality of radially reciprocatory hammer blocks, a clamping device for reducing noise created by such machine when running empty, said damping device comprising, in combination, a plurality of plungers, including springs to expand said plungers longitudinally, fluid pressure means acting to press said plungers longitudinally against the sides of said hammer blocks, a lever and push rod, a conduit for supplying fluid under pressure to said fluid pressure means, a valve in said conduit, yieldable means for normally holding said valve closed, and a trigger to be acted upon by work pieces placed in said machine where- 4 by said trigger controls said valve to thereby relieve said hammer blocks from the retarding effect of said damping device while said swaging machine is operating upon Work pieces.
5. In a rotary swaging machine having a plurality of radially reciprocatory hammer blocks, a damping device for reducing noise created by such machine when running empty, said clamping device comprising, in combination, a plurality of plungers, fluid pressure means acting to press said plungers against the sides of said hammer blocks, a conduit for supplying fluid under pressure to said fluid pressure means, a valve in said conduit, yielda'ble means for normally holding said valve closed, and a trigger to be acted upon by work pieces placed in said machine whereby said trigger controls said valve to thereby relieve said hammer blocks from the retarding efiect of said damping device while said swaging machine is operating upon work pieces.
