Abstract
936,249. Heat exchangers. JOY MANUFACTURING CO. July 26, 1960 [Aug. 11, 1959], No. 25934/60. Class 64 (3). In a heat exchanger in which heat exchange means are located within a first fluid passageway and are in heat transfer relation to one side of a tubular wall and to a second fluid passageway on the opposite side of the tubular wall, the heat exchange means comprises an outer and an inner heat transfer means in heat transfer relation to an intermediate elongated tubular member having gaps extending about the member but discontinuous in rectilinear longitudinal direction, each of the heat transfer means defining an annular section of the first fluid passageway and providing flow paths longitudinally and transversely of the elongated member and through the gaps therein. In Fig. 1, an elongated tube 2 has a spiral spring-like member 4 tightly wound over and secured to its outer surface. A flat or hollow ribbon 6 is helically wound over the members 4 and a gap 8 is formed which extends helically. This ribbon divides the passageway between tubes 2 and 12 into two portions, inter-communication being provided between adjacent portions through the helical gap 8. Although only two parallel flow paths are shown, any plurality of adjacent channels may be so separated. Tubes 2, 12 and 16 are secured to suitable header constructions to obtain parallel flow paths. Also a thin perforated or slotted tube may be substituted for the ribbon 6. The tubes 12 and 16, spiral members 4, 10 and 14 and ribbon 6 may be concentric or eccentric with respect to the tube 2.
