936,198. Reactor pressure vessels. A. J. HARRIS, and SIR ROBERT McALPINE & SONS Ltd. June 8, 1962 [June 26, 1961; Oct. 11, 1961], Nos. 23044/61 and 36551/61. Class 39 (4). A nuclear reactor pressure vessel, is formed of a concrete shell, in the walls and ends of which are mounted pre-stressed cables. In the walls, the cables are laid helically relative to the shell axis. As shown, the vessel has a concrete cylindrical wall 10 and top and bottom slabs 12, 11. The cables in the wall lie within metal tubes 13 which form right and left hand helices and which are bowed outwards in a barrel formation Tubes 19 carry the cables in the slabs 11, 12, and are arranged in grid form. Cable clamps (not shown) at the ends of each tube are formed by a tapered aperture with an inner core, between which the cable strands are gripped. The reactor core 51 is surrounded by the biological shield 50 and cooled by fluid passing through apertures 54, 55 to heat-exchangers 53.
