Abstract

948,909. Nuclear fuel elements. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. June 13, 1960 [ June 19, 1959; Dec. 11, 1959], Nos. 21221/59 and 42312/59. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor core, the moderator comprises light water together with either lead or magnesium. As shown, the fuel rods 310 mounted in stainless steel tubes 311 are surrounded by double walled magnesium tubes 312 in which the interwall space 312a is fitted with magnesium oxide. An aluminium tube 313 surrounds tube 312 and certain of the tubes 313 are surrounded by aluminium tubes 314, longitudinally fluted or 314a to accommodate adjacent tubes 312. The spaces 316 are filled with light water as are the tubes 314 in which the level is varied to control reactivity. In alternative forms, not shown, the magnesium oxide may be replaced by lead and reactivity control is effected by the adjustment of water level in tubes separate from the fuel elements. In a further embodiment, separate lead or magnesium blocks are mounted between the fuel tubes and space between the tubes and blocks fitted with light water. Reactivity control is effected by adjustment of the water level in passages within blocks. Specifications 909,637, 910,515 and 926, 616 are referred to.
