Abstract

935,904. X-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 13, 1959 [Sept. 13, 1958], No. 30923/59. Class 39 (1). An X-ray shadow-microscope comprises an X-ray tube having an adjustable electron optical lens system 19, 20, 21 arranged to focus a first electron beam travelling from a cathode 9 to a small spot on a target 18 so as to produce X-rays arranged to impinge on a first fluorescent screen (outside the tube) a second fluorescent screen 14 arranged on the cathode side of the magnetic electron optical system 22, 23 and arranged to intercept a second beam of secondary electrons emitted from a spot on the target 18 and passing through the lens system, so as to indicate an image of the spot on the target 18, a magnetic stigmator 27 having a plurality of energizable magnetic poles arranged symmetrically about the two beams of electrons in which adjacent poles are arranged to have opposite polarities and an electrostatic stigmator 30 having a plurality of energizable electrodes arranged symmetrically around the two beams of electrons in which adjacent electrodes are arranged to have opposite polarities, the arrangement being such that the magnetic and electrostatic stigmators each have astigmatisms which are separately adjustable in value and direction, whereby the stigmators 27, 30 serve to correct the axial astigmatism of the system 22, 23. The magnetic stigmator is first adjusted to exhibit the direction of astigmatism of the lens and this is then corrected by the electrostatic stigmator, in a way which is fully described in the Specification. The stigmators 27, 30 may be interchanged in position or may both be on the same side of the electron optical system. The eight magnetic rods 27 may have energizing coils 28 and are sealed through non-magnetic rings 29. Alternatively a quadrupolar magnetic system may be used, the poles being rotatable about the common axis. The electrostatic stigmator 30 has eight electrodes. Polepieces 15 produce a transverse magnetic field to separate the initial and returning electrons.
