Abstract

[Also in Division H1] In a cathode-ray tube of the character display type wherein an electron beam is deflected on to a selected shaped aperture 16 in a stencil 14 and the resultant shaped beam is deflected by means 21 to a desired position on a target 13, a first deflection yoke 17 deflects the beam on to the required aperture 16, a second deflection yoke 18 deflects the beam back to the axis, a third deflection yoke 19 directs the beam along the axis, and electrodes 43 and 48 maintain a substantially equipotential region through the deflection yokes to minimise distortions produced by lens aberrations. As shown the potential of electrode 48 may be adjustable to a limited extent to compensate for variations in field strength of the yokes due to manufacturing tolerances. As shown each yoke comprises an X coil and a Y coil, and all the corresponding coils may be connected in series so that they may be fed from a common amplifier, the windings in the yoke 18 being oppositely wound from those in the other two yokes. The tube shown in Fig. 1 includes an electrostatic focusing system 37-39 before the yoke 17 and an electrostatic focusing system 51-52 after the yoke 19: in a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), these are replaced by focusing coils (156 and 157). The target 13 may be a phosphor, and the tube may be used for visual read-out, photography, or electrostatic printing.
