Glass foam is made from loess, a naturally occuring clay of composition SiO 2 > 50; Al 2 O 3 < 15; CaO<15; Na 2 CO 3 < 3 in percentages by weight, by heating to a temperature of 1180‹ to 1220‹ C. at which temperature gaseous bubbles form spontaneously in the material, and then allowing it to cool.
