Abstract
935,226. Measuring electrically. RICHARD THOMAS & BALDWINS Ltd. June 4, 1962 [June 2, 1961], No. 20005/61. Class 40 (1). Apparatus for determining the oxygen content of molten steel comprises two thermocouples 3, 4 (Fig. 1), the former surrounded by a length of aluminium wire 8, each thermocouple located inside a silica tube 1, 2, closed by a thin steel disc 5, and supported by a common mounting 6. The assembly is pushed into the molten steel, and the discs 5 melt, whereupon the aluminium wire 8 also melts and absorbs heat from thermocouple 3, and then reacts exothermically with the absorbed oxygen. The temperature change, measured by connecting the thermocouples 3, 4 in series opposition to a recorder, is said to be proportional to the oxygen content of the steel.
