Abstract

1428170 Measuring heat loss from surfaces EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 8 June 1973 [9 June 1972] 27475/73 Headings G1D and G1N Apparatus for-measuring low thermal fluxes from a surface comprises a metal contact plate 1, a rod 3 attached to the plate 1 and at least two temperature measuring elements, e.g. thermocouples, 6, 7 along the rod 3. Means are provided for maintaining the end of rod 3 which is furthest from the plate 1 at a fixed or variable temperature which is less than the temperature of the surface and which is such that the plate does not undesirably disturb the temperature of the surface, and thermal insulation 4 is disposed around the rod 3 and in contact with or adjacent the plate 1. The temperature maintaining means may be effected by passing cooling fluid through end 8 (as shown) and/or by altering the rod length. The thermal insulation 4 may be glass wool and the rod may be of metal which may be different from that of plate 1. One or more temperature measuring elements 10, 11, e.g. thermocouples may be positioned in the surface of wall 2 in order to monitor the temperature thereof so as to determine whether it is affected by that of end 8. For low heat loss, the flux is proportional to the temperature difference #T.
