Abstract

1528953 Measuring heat flux BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 19 July 1976 [17 April 1975] 15909/75 Heading G1D [Also in Division H1] A probe for measuring radiant heat flux comprises a conductive body 2 which has one end-face 6 suitable for exposure to incident heat and the other end in thermal connection with a heat pipe 5, thermal insulation 9 surrounding the body, and means measuring the temperature difference between two points in the body at different distances from the one end face. The body 2 comprises two portions 2a, 2b of chromel and two discs 3, 4 of constanten or alumel brazed together and soft-soldered to the heat pipe 5 which has cooling fins 11; it is surrounded by asbestos 9, refractory cement 9a and a stainless steel tube 10. Electric connections 13, 14 are attached to and are of the same alloy as the discs 3, 4 the junctions between the discs and the body portions 2a, 2b constituting thermocouples for indicating the temperature difference between the discs. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown) the body comprises two pairs of discs, each pair being a chromel disc brazed to an alumel disc, and the body portions (102a, 102b) are of mild steel. In another modification the body is an integral metal slug with two transverse bores housing encapsulated thermocouples.
