Abstract

Detergent compositions are produced by reacting in solution in a liquid or liquefied polyalkylene glycol, preferably a polyethylene glycol, one or more detergent acids, e.g. dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid, with potassium or, preferably, sodium hydroxide to neutralize all or substantially all of the acid or acids. It is preferable to use the alkali in powder, pellet or flake form, any solid unreacted alkali being removed by mechanical means, and to utilize the heat evolved on neutralization to help maintain the glycol in the liquid state. When substantially all of the acid has been neutralized the neutralization may be completed with an alkaline builder, e.g. trisodium phosphate. Higher fatty acids, e.g. stearic or lauric acid, may be included in the solution in the polyalkylene glycol and neutralized by the use of additional sodium or potassium hydroxide over that required to neutralize the detergent acid. The detergent compositions preferably contain 5 to 50% by weight of polyalkylene glycol and one or more additives, for example foam boosters and stabilizers, e.g. lauric acid isopropanolamide and myristic acid monoethanolamide; inorganic fillers, e.g. sodium sulphate; water softeners, e.g. sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate; sterilizing agents, bactericides and bacteriostats, e.g. o-phenyl phenol, chlorhexidine salts, and 3,5,31,41-tetrachlorosalicylanilide. Bars are produced by allowing the liquid composition to cool and set in suitable moulds.ALSO:Detergent compositions are produced by reacting in solution in a liquid or liquified polyalkylene glycol, preferably a polyethylene glycol, one or more detergent acids with potassium or, preferably, sodium hydroxide to neutralise all or substantially all of the acid or acids. It is preferable to use the alkali in powder, pellet or flake form, the solid unreacted alkali being removed by mechanical means, and to utilize the heat evolved on neutralisation to help maintain the glycol in the liquid state. When substantially all of the acid has been neutralised the neutralisation may be completed with an alkaline builder, e.g. trisodium phosphate. Higher fatty acids, e.g. stearic and lauric acids, may be included in the solution in the polyalkylene glycol and neutralised by the use of additional sodium or potassium hydroxide over that required to neutralise the detergent acid. The detergent compositions preferably contain 5 to 50% by weight of polyalkylene glycol and one or more additives; for example foam boosters or stabilizers; inorganic fillers; water softeners; sterilizing agents; bactericides and bacteriostatics. Examples are given in which the detergent acid is commercial dodecane-sulphonic acid.
