Abstract

934,169. Aircraft. L. Z. FREELAND. April 30, 1962, No. 16484/62. Class 4. An aircraft has a body 12, Fig. 1, having upper and lower panels 16, 18 defining an annular chamber 22 into which air is drawn through openings 48, 50, 52, 54 by air moving means 34, 36, 38, 40, a plurality of groups 58, 60, 62, 64 of ducts register with chamber 22, each duct branching into laterally and downwardly opening passages 88, 90, Fig. 4, with a control deflector 94 at the junction of passages 88, 90 to direct air from chamber 22 selectively to passages 88, 90. The panels 16, 18 are connected by walls 20, 26. The deflectors 94 of each group of duets have their shafts 96 coupled together by universal joints as have valves 100 and 102 in passages 88, 90. The position of deflectors 94 and valves 100, 102 is controlled by separate electric motors, Fig. 5 (not shown). For vertical take off, all the deflectors are adjusted to the Fig. 1 position. For forward flight the deflectors of group 64 are moved to the Fig. 4 position whilst the remainder are in the Fig. 1 position with the valves 102 of group 60 closed. Rolling moments are obtained by opening the valves 102 of one group 58 or 62 more than the other, and pitching is obtaining by opening the valves 102 of one group 60 or 64 more than the other. The equivalent of yaw control is obtained by permitting discharge through the passages of group 58, 62 which together with the discharge through group 64 produces a movement of the aircraft to the left or right.
