Abstract

792,993. Propelling aircraft. GROSE, F. J. May 9, 1956 [May 10, 1955], No. 13489/55. Class 4. An aircraft provided with means to assist vertical flight comprises a fuselage 10 housing a pair of jet propulsion engines 14 each supplied with air from an intake 20 and exhausting into a rearwardly directed duct 22. Each duct 22 is provided with a hinged valve member 15 which may allow the exhaust gases to pass rearwardly along the duct or, when placed in the position shown in Fig. 1, may deflect the gases into a branch duct 17, both of which terminate in a common central collecting chamber 16. This chamber is surmounted by a deflector plate 13 which is located above and spaced a small distance from an opening 12 in a delta wing 11. Flaps 21 may close the aperture 12 on the lower surface of the wing and the upper surface may be closed bv downward movement of deflector 13 by means of hydraulic jacks. In a further embodiment the engines are spaced apart longitudinally of the fuselage with air intakes at either end. The exhaust gases are continuously ejected for deflection by deflector 13 and translational flight is stated to be achieved by inclination of the wing with respect to the fuselage.
