Abstract

1388852 Deflecting propulsion jets HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 1 March 1972 [1 March 1971] 5692/71 Heading B7G An aircraft by pass gas turbine engine 11 has the by pass air efflux duct bifurcated to pass on each side of a gas generator 14, both cold air ducts 13 and the hot gas duct having jet deflector nozzles 15 and 16 respectively operable between positions which give horizontal and vertical thrust. Each nozzle has upper and lower doors 17 pivotable at their forward edges between positions co-planar with the upper and lower nozzle surfaces and positions in which they close the nozzle exits. Further doors 22, pivotable about their outer edges, close or open apertures 19 in said nozzle surfaces, the apertures being formed with curved guide vanes 20 and further, louvre-type, doors 21. In operation, for forward thrust, doors 21, 22 are closed and doors 17 open. For jet lift, doors 17 are closed and the lower sets only of doors 21, 22 are opened. For pitch control upper and lower doors 21, 22 are operated selectively and all the doors are operable by a common control means whereby the outflow area for the hot gas and cold air is maintained substantially constant.
