Abstract

869,632. Direct lift aircraft. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT Ltd. June 9, 1959 [March 11, 1958], No. 7881/58. Class 4. In an aircraft, in which direct lift is provided by a fan system driven by the efflux from one or more jet engines and means, such as louvres at the fan duct outlet, are provided for deflecting the fan discharge forwardly or rearwardly to provide a horizontal thrust component, the effective cross-sectional area of the fan duct increases progressively between the fan and the outlet to avoid loss of thrust during deflection. The lower part of the fan hub is tapered as shown to provide a crosssectional area at the outlet plane of the louvres (which for vertical lift are coned inwardly as shown). which is substantially the same as the cross-sectional area of the duct at the fan. The movement of the louvres simultaneously in the same direction to deflect the airflow, Fig. 3 (not shown), will produce substantially an equivalent cross-sectional area at the louvre outlet. In an alternative embodiment the hub is cylindrical and the outer wall of the duct between the fan and the louvres is flared outwardly or both hub and outer wall may be flared.
