Abstract

To remove nicotine from tobacco the tobacco is treated with an organic solvent, e.g. methylathyl ketone, the resultant solvent being contacted with brine to remove the nicotine and then recycled for fresh treatment of the tobacco. Removal of other solvent-soluble constituents from the tobacco such as waxes and flavourings is thereby reduced since the solvent rapidly becomes saturated with such constituents. The nicotine may be removed from the brine by alkalizing the brine and contacting it with a second organic solvent, e.g. methylethyl ketone, from which the nicotine is removed. Other suitable organic solvents are methylethyl isobutyl ketone, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, hexane and isobutanol. Numerous quantitative examples are given.
